Benue Council Poll: 185 Aspirants Pick Nomination Forms

Ahead of the local government council elections in Benue State, 185 aspirants from the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the ruling All Progressives Congress have picked both Expression of Interest and Nominations forms to contest for the chairmanship and councillorship positions respectively.

The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission had last month fixed September 3, 2016 for the local government polls in the state.

The breakdown showed that out of the figure, the APC had 178 and the PDP had seven.

Both the spokesman for the APC in the state, Mr. John Ikwulono, and the PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, confirmed this in separate interviews with newsmen in Makurdi.

The APC’s state Director of Publicity, Mr. John Ikwulono, further affirmed that 134 aspirants bought forms for councillorship positions while 44 bought forms for the chairmanship seat across the 23 local government councils.

Ikwulono expressed satisfaction with the aspirants’ level of interest as they were ready to render selfless service at the grassroots in the state. He said that those who picked the forms were mostly favoured by the zoning arrangement put in place by the APC zoning committee.

He explained that after the forms’ sales were over, the party would put in place screening committee to be supervised by law enforcement agents.

According to him, those aspirants with questionable characters and those who do not possess relevant documents will be disqualified.

On the other hand, the PDP publicity secretary said five aspirants of the party purchased forms for councillors while two female aspirants bought forms for chairmanship.

Iortyom expressed confidence that the PDP would win majority seats in the council’s election, despite being an opposition party in the state.

He said the APC government had brought untold hardship on  the people of the state, especially the state and local government workers, who could not be paid for several months.
