  Fire guts Benue varsity building

An uncontrollable fire has destroyed two ultra-modern lecture auditoriums at the Benue State University, Makurdi, and properties worth millions of naira were completely damaged.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the inferno which happened on Sunday occurred at about 10pm when the students were resuming school. Men of the fire service had arrived the scene late.

Recall that a female hostel had few months ago, got burnt at the second campus of the institution and many students lost their educational credentials and other personal properties.

It was gathered that the incessant fire occurrences have been propelled by political crisis in the leadership of the tertiary institution. Others said it was angry students who were protesting the removal of the vice chancellor, Prof. Charity Angya that set the building ablaze.

The two auditoriums are located in the college of health sciences in the main campus of the institution and were confirmed to have been burnt because of electrical spark in the building. Major political events and book launch hold in the place.

The information officer of the university, Mr. Tser Vanger confirmed the incident yesterday, and said that no life was lost, adding that all properties in the building were razed beyond repairs.

According to Vanger, “the fire started at about 9pm and the entire auditoriums are completely burnt.”
