The All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom has inaugurated a 79-Member campaign team with a charge to supporters to exercise restraint in the face of intimidation and provocation.

Chief Dr Ortom who stated this Thursday at the inauguration of the campaign team headed by Prof Steven Ugbah stressed that the way to “government house Makurdi should start with discipline and love.”

 The event which was held at Smile View Hotel, Makurdi drew thousands of supporters across the state. “Remain focused on our mission and be civil as we make our final appeal to the people of Benue state to give us their votes even as you show restraint in the face of intimidation and provocation, ” Chief Dr Ortom stated.

In Ortom’s two-page speech entitled: “We are running out of time,” the former Minister of State for Trade and Investment emphasised the position of the state in the affairs of the nation, saying that Nigeria is waiting for Benue state to provide her with the needed food supply. The former Minister stressed that the state’s rural endowment places it ahead adding that his administration would put in place the right policies to drive agriculture and other sectors in which the state has comparative and competitive advantages.

 He directed the campaign team to constitute committees to involve more people in canvassing support for the party to win the forthcoming elections. Prof Ugbah stated that he accepted the responsibility to lead the Ortom campaign team in the interest of the party and appealed to other aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to also bury the hatchet and team up for the electoral victory of the party at the polls. “I am doing this because at this time, Ortom stands the best chance of leading us forward, so whatever ambitions I had, I have put them on hold,” Prof Ugbah stated. “I’m not about ego tripping to insist that I must contest for governor, actors come and go, so if its Gods time tomorrow, he’ll bring me back. For now, I’m going to clear the stage for Ortom to shine”. Professor Ugbah expressed appreciation to Chief Dr Ortom for “daring to approach me, knowing what happened, to lead his campaign.”

He said he would rely on the support and input of all party members, especially the leader of the party in the state, Senator George Akume to deliver on his mandate to lead the Ortom/Abounu ticket to victory. In his remarks, the APC state chairman, Comrade Abba Yaro, represented by the state secretary of the party, Mr Onov Tyuulugh, expressed excitement at the large turnout of supporters for the occasion, saying the entry of Dr Ortom into the APC has boosted the fortunes of the party and positioned it for victory at the polls.
