Benue Court Remands 3 Men Over Firearms

A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded three men in prison custody over illegal possession of firearms.

The Magistrate, Mrs Theresa Wergba, who gave the order, said the accused should remain behind bars till July 23.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the plea of the trio was not taken as the court declined jurisdiction over the matter.

The accused are Tyolumun Orseer, Terfu Shinayima and Yahaya Garba, all residents of Makurdi.

The prosecutor, Insp. Edward Imo, had told the court that the accused were arrested by the police on May 27 for allegedly being in possession of firearms.

He said the case was reported at ‘B’ Division Police Headquarters, Makurdi, and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Bureau.

According to him, the accused were caught with a locally-made pistol, two rounds of live ammunition and a cutlass at Welfare Quarters, Makurdi.

Imo said the offences contravened Sections 6 (b) and 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act 2004.

The case has been adjourned to July 23. (NAN)
