'No Benue Pilgrim Died in Hajj Stampede'

The Benue State Amirul hajj for this year's exercise, Alhaji Aliyu Tashako, has said that no pilgrim from the state died in either the stampede or crane incident which occurred in the holy land.

Tashako said the state's pilgrims were saved from the stampede largely because they "remained close to their leaders".

He said it was necessary for leaders of each state's delegation to be close to the pilgrims at all times. He also told journalists in Makurdi that none of them took ill during the pilgrimage, adding that he was with 412 delegates from Benue in the same hotel and ensured that they were well fed.

"I was not happy that throughout our stay, the overall head of pilgrims appointed by the federal government did not have a meeting with us. In fact, I did not see him anywhere around," he said.
