Over 500,000 Children Immunized In Benue

Over 500,000 children have been immunized across the 23 local government areas of Benue State during the just concluded second round of Maternal and Newborn Child Health Week (MNCHW) in the state.

Flagging off the event in Ado local government area, wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Eunice Ortom charged mothers to avail themselves the opportunity to present their children aged between zero to five for the routine immunization.

Represented by wife of the Deputy Governor, Justice Mary Abounu, Mrs. Ortom who also thanked Helen Keler International (HKI) and UNICEF for supporting the state government in ensuring the immunization of all its children during the MNCHW also commended the staff of the state Ministry of Health for their dedication.

Also speaking, State Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Regina Ijale who noted that the MNCHW was last carried out in the state in July 2015 explained that the just concluded round was conducted in all the 23 local government areas of the state.

“We had adequate drugs such as Vitamin A, Albendazole, Iron tablets and long lasting insecticide treated nets distributed to all children of Benue while emphasis was also made on reaching those in the most difficult to reach areas.”

In the four local government areas of Ohimini, Oju, Gwer East and Otukpo where our Correspondent monitored, women were seen eagerly bringing their children for immunization just as the the focal persons in those areas while thanking UNICEF and HKI for their support however complained of poor remuneration of field workers.
