AN ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF BENUE STATE, HIS EXCELLENCY, DR. SAMUEL ORTOM, REPRESENTED BY THE HON. COMMISSIONER FOR YOUTHS AND SPORTS DEVELOPMENT-HON. LAWRENCE ONOJA JR., DURING THE OPENING CEREMONY OF 2016 BATCH ‘B’ ORIENTATION COURSE HELD AT THE NYSC PERMANENT ORIENTATION CAMP, WANNUNE, TARKA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ON MONDAY 28TH NOVEMBER, 2016.

PROTOCOL

My dear beloved compatriots in national service, I count it a moment of great excitement to felicitate with you over your successful graduation from different ivory towers across the world, which is the basic prerequisite for your mobilization into the National Youth Service Corps scheme. Similarly, I heartily salute the zeal and zest you exhibited in taking the oath of allegiance just few minutes ago. The thunderous sounds of your voices while taking the oath emphatically demonstrated how ready you are to uphold the basic tenet of the 43 years old National Youth Service Corps, which is “putting the nation first at all times”.

As humans, it is possible that you accepted your call-up for service and subsequent deployment to Benue state with reservation owing to the numerous challenges bedeviling our dear nation at this moment. Nevertheless, I urge you to discard those anxieties because as a government, we are poised to ensure you enjoy your stay in this state. For the avoidance of doubt, our administrations in conjunction with all security agencies in the state have also put in place giant proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of all inhabitants of the state, with particular emphasis on work places and residential areas of Corps members. You will also discover very soon right from this camp that our people are highly hospitable and very accommodating to visitors, especially corps members. I therefore implore you to relax and feel at home because Benue is a home away from home.

Having said that, great Nigerian youths, I want you to count it a rare privilege to be part of the success story of the NYSC Scheme. This is a scheme that has been able to successfully bring together Nigerian graduates from all socio-cultural, educational and religious backgrounds, given them the opportunity to co-exist harmoniously since its inception; and I have confidence that your batch will not be an exception. Therefore, I encourage you to interact freely with your colleagues from other parts of the country, and in that process establish friendships that will last a lifetime.

Gentlemen Corps members, have it also at the back of your minds that NYSC is a platform you can use to showcase your intellectual and creative ingenuity in contributing your quota to nation-building anywhere you may find yourselves. May I remind you that being assiduously commitment to community development service is a sure way you can stand out among your peers and print your names in gold in the sands of time. I therefore enjoin you to serve your fatherland with unreserved loyalty and dedication. If you do so, the nation will give you due recognition and reward you handsomely.

In the light of this, I feel it is expedient to extol the exemplary humanitarian virtues of Dr. Christian Ozim, an Ex-Corps member who recently built and equipped a Primary Health Care Clinic at Mbagav village of Gwer West Local Government Area. In recognition of his huge contribution to humanity, the state government has rewarded him with an automatic employment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, in addition to monetary reward. And we are poised to extend a similar gesture to any Corps member who distinguishes himself during the service year.

Having said that, on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, I hereby declare the 2016 Batch ‘B’ orientation course for corps members deployed to Benue State open.

Thank you and God bless!
